Gentle hand on head during a Craniosacral Therapy Session (CST).

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-invasive form of bodywork that can help to release tension, promote relaxation, and reduce pain. The goal is to improve the functioning of the central nervous system. But what is a session like? And what can you expect during your Craniosacral Therapy Session?

If you’re considering CST, here are some things you can anticipate in a session:

  • A comfortable, relaxed setting: CST should be performed in a quiet, private setting. You will likely be lying down on a treatment table.
  • Gentle touch: During the session, the practitioner will use a light touch to assess and manipulate the bones and tissues of the body. The therapist’s hand contact is very gentle and should not be uncomfortable.
  • Deep relaxation: Many people find Craniosacral Therapy to be deeply relaxing and may even fall asleep during the session. Tension and pain are often reduced.
  • Increased body awareness: As you relax and become more attuned to your body, you may become more aware of sensations such as warmth, tingling, or pulsing.
  • Emotional release: It is not uncommon for people to experience emotional release during or after a CST session. This can include feelings of sadness, joy, or even laughter. Most common is a feeling of calm and balance within.
  • Nothing at all: Sometimes no immediate effect is felt at all. The body is beginning to process the treatment and needs more time before they are apparent.

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, natural way to heal from within. It can help with chronic pains such as sciatica or headaches, or emotional problems like stress, depression, or anxiety. It’s a very powerful tool in my Osteopathic Manual Therapy practice that I use daily to help my patients in their journey.
